1974 BMW 2002tii, 5 spd. Vin # 2780001 identifying as the first 1974 tii produced for US market.
It was built on 10/17/73 and delivered directly to the BMW internal fleet on 11/14/73 (info from A. Harz, BMW archive group, BMW Mobile Tradition). A recent note designated it as an evaluation car for the production group. This factory original car was paint code 006 = Sahara. It has a non functioning km speedometer and the license plate lights are factory mounted wide for a euro plate.
The vin tag, body stamp on passenger side, dash pad, engine block, and california emissions tag on driver door jam all match with 2780001.
Currently for safety, comfort, and performance, this tii uses e30 14" alloy wheels, k&n filter, sport springs, and 22 & 19mm bars. Its current gear set allows for only 2200rpm at 55 mph for unstressed interstate drives.
In addition to a new clutch kit, the tie rods, center link, and steering box were replaced. Recently the original 40 year old rubber fuel lines still labeled with "made in W Germany" were replaced with new 7.9 mm and 12mm fuel injection line. Gas tank was also cleaned and resealed. The Kfish Pump appears renewed along with the rebuilt motor. It has the correct Tii exhaust manifold with a new stock exhaust. It does not smoke, even on deceleration nor burn any oil.
2780001 has a long non-ac console with the correct blaupunkt am/fm radio, manuals and stock steering wheel. Even have the ignition and trunk key in original leather holder.
The car was/is not rust free. Both front fenders and correct tii nose appear to be replacements. Driver side outer rocker skin has two rust spots along with each door corner. The dash has cracks but the tii clock works. The pitted windshield is an early version "SIGLA", with "Made in W Germany" in upper left.
2780001 is not a delicate show car but is secured in a climate controlled garage. Its driven in all southeast weather conditions.
