1967  Buick  Riviera

This is one of the prettiest cars ever designed by Buick, or any other manufacturer for that matter. It was the first year for the completely new 430 Buick V8, a modern thin-wall casting that replaced the old 401-425. It was one of the few years that the Riviera had a full set of gauges, rather than idiot lights, as well as the drum style 140 MPH speedometer. In addition this one comes with the Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission, power brakes, power steering, air conditioning, remote mirror, power windows, power seats (non functioning), power antenna, tilt wheel, and road wheels. All in all it was quite an automobile when in its’ prime, and something that scores way up there in the “cool” category these days.

This car has been sitting in a garage for the past few years. The people that had it were going to restore the car but lost interest and that is how I ended up with it. After they purchased it, it developed a knock in the engine and they tore the engine down and found that it had spun a connecting rod bearing. The guy I bought it from said he had the crank checked and that it could be turned down. The engine is currently disassembled but is complete, right down to the original air cleaner. In fact, the car is pretty much complete all the way through, the only thing I can see missing is a small trim piece for the original vinyl roof and the original front seats are gone. Someone pulled those out and put in some front bucket seats. It even still has the original owner’s manual and warranty booklet.

Appearance wise, the car is the result of some poor body prep and paint work. The original color was gold (you can see it inside the door jams and trunk lid) and had a vinyl roof. It is now painted a lurid shade of purple. A real bonus on this car is that there appears to be very little rust in it compared to most GM products of these years. There is a rust hole in the lower forward portion of the passenger door and some rust through the driver floor pan. The rest of the floor pans appear very solid, as does the trunk pan. I ran a weak magnet along the lower portions of the body and it stuck all the way around, so the lowers are pretty solid, also. All the windows are there, but the front windshield is cracked.

The interior was beige to being with, but has been partially changed over to light gray. The odometer shows 36,999 miles, but after looking at the brake pedal I would say that is actually 136,999 miles. The car has a complete set of Buick road wheels mounted on the ground, as well as a fifth road wheel mounted for a spare in the trunk.

Overall, this car has a lot of potential and would be a good, solid candidate for a restoration. Or, if someone chose to do so, it would make an outstanding donor car due to its’ completeness. That would have to be someone else’s decision. I am not a dealer, but I enjoy tinkering with American cars of this vintage and have been doing it long enough to remember them when they were new. Currently, I have way too many projects and have not really messed with any Buicks for some time now. I only got the car because the people who had it were never going to get any farther on it, and I am certain that someone out there could make use of it. It comes with a clear Texas title and the purchasing price is $950. I can be reached at 325-392-3878 or you can e-mail me at 4paladin@gte.net. I would also like to thank this website for allowing me to put it in their free classifieds section. If I sell the car through here, I will be sending them a donation for their kindness.

May God bless America,
