1969 Ford Mustang
1969 Mustang Grande Triple Black S-code Big Block! One of only six made, this car is really something special. This 1969 Grande is by far the best documented Grande in existence. Every single receipt for everything that has ever been done to this two owner car has been kept. Each shock absorber, each air cleaner, each oil change, the engine rebuild, the trans rebuild, the rear axle replacement to a traction loc unit in 2001, EVERYTHING has been kept year by year and actually put on a spread sheet! There is a service file 6 inches thick that includes pictures of the car from the 70’s and 80’s and 90’s! This car has had over $50,000 worth of documented maintenance done over its lifetime! The car was treated like a beloved family member with good health coverage. It needed it, it got it. You can’t help but wonder if perhaps the older female owner was taken advantage of at some of these service stops since SO much was done to this car. Here is one car that you do not have to wonder what was done to it over its lifetime because everything has been 100% documented. Want to know when the last time brakes were done? Look in the file. As recent as 2001, this car had almost $7,000 in service work done by a Midas repair shop which included a fully rebuilt Jasper traction loc 9” rear axle assembly, 100% new brakes (everything), totally new Exhaust, new springs (4), rebuilt front end, new seals, etc etc etc. This was less than 8,000 miles ago.
What else makes this car special? The woman that owned the car was in her 40’s when she bought it and in her 80’s when she sold it in 2000. It is an unbelievably solid, never rotted, documented California car bought new in Manhattan Beach and spent its days in San Francisco. This is also well documented by the numerous service records from that area all the way through 2000. In 2000 the car was sent to Tennessee to the second owner. There is also a fascinating “goodbye” letter written by the 80+ year old woman selling the car because the power became “too much” for her to handle. (A copy of that letter is posted on the picture link below) She even describes in the letter the day she bought the car new! There are 12 stickers in the windows, rear bumper and mirror that all document its life in sunny California. From a high school faculty parking sticker (she was a teacher) to California emission stickers to Portofino Inn passes, all preserving the car’s history.
What else makes this car special? It is a factory triple Raven black car loaded with options. The most important is the original, numbers matching (VIN) and date coded correct (8m7) date coded FE big block 390 engine. Not only the engine, but the rare GT smog heads, S-code intake and trans are all date coded correct and numbers matching to the car. Even the rare and Valuable S-code aircleaner (Value now $450) and exhaust manifolds (Value now $400) are still present. But that’s not all! The car was also well equipped with the Deluxe Mach 1 style interior with woodgrain dash and console, deluxe woodgrain door panels and passenger side clock! The car also is factory equipped with Select-air air-conditioning, factory AM/FM stereo radio (Value now $500, not working) with factory door speakers, working Rimbow steering wheel (Value now $600), factory dark green tinted glass, vinyl top, power disc brakes, power steering, remote sport mirrors, exterior trim group including tail panel molding, console, interior light package and more! The original 1969 front hood scoop with factory 390 call-outs and working turn signal lights (Value now $350) was added later along with the Mach 1 front spoiler that helps cool the big block. The car also received a full set of Magnum 500 wheels with brand new BF/Goodrich T/A radials with less than 1,000 miles on them (Value $950).
The car is a wonderful car to drive. It starts smoothly and idles whisper quiet unless you are standing behind it and feel the big block rumble. Standing on the throttle is a different story though! It roars to life and takes off, pushing you back in the seat. One the highway it runs as smooth as silk and can easily hit 100MPH without breathing heavily. It cruises comfortably at 75MPH with no shakes or noises and is easily ready for a cross country drive. It tracks straight and handles corners very well with the 60 series radials. The brakes are 100% new (including booster, MC, calipers, pads, rotors, drums, shoes, hardware, etc) but feel like there is a bubble of air in there somewhere as the pedal is a little low.
The body is what you would expect of a California beauty. There is not a speck of rust on any of the floors, rockers or frame rails anywhere and never was. The car has all of its original floor pans in perfect condition! The only rust anywhere on this car is a slight bit of bubbling on the lower exterior left rear quarter panel behind the tire. There is no rust anywhere else that I have been able to find, and I’ve looked hard. The car has been painted and has some hazing and cracking of the older paint here and there with chips and a few scratches but it still shines good and looks pretty good. From the paperwork it looks like it was repainted back in the mid 90’s. The original vinyl top is still nice. The original rear bumper is excellent with it’s 1985 AAA sticker still in place. The car is straight and clean and would be easy to re-paint back to perfect black.
The interior is 100% original with the exception of the carpet. Seats, dash, door panels, etc are all original to the car. The driver’s seat has a little wear but the rest is near perfect. The dash has some cracks near the speaker but is otherwise nice. All lights, gauges (except clock of course) all work perfectly. Even the rimblow steering wheel still works!
In short, this is a rare car with a desirable color combo and options list and an amazing history and story. A big block Mustang is a joy to own and this one is no exception.
