For sale in our St. Louis showroom is a rare opportunity to own a part of Mustang history. In 1993 Ford created something they hadn't in many years: a street legal race car. When one thinks of racing Mustangs, you may remember GT350Rs of the 60s, but not many know they brought back they same concept in the Fox body platform. Ford's Special Vehicle Team produced 107 1993 Ford Mustang Cobra Rs. The R of course standing for race. There were 4,993 standard Mustang Cobras produced that year and at first glance the R model may not seem much different. The power output is identical at 235 HP. The main differences are what was missing in the R. The Cobra R came without power windows, a radio, air conditioning, power door locks, power mirrors, sound deadening, and perhaps most noticeably without a back seat. This equipment was eliminated to save weight and keep the car light on its feet at the track. The track is what these cars were specifically designed for, and to be sure they didn't get into the wrong hands, Ford required purchasers to have a valid racing license.
Power comes from a 5.0 Liter V8 which puts out 235 HP and 280 Ft. Lbs. of torque. The block is that of Fox Body GT Mustangs, but with many changes to the rest of the engine for the Cobra R. GT-40 high flow cast iron heads were used as well as roller rockers. The unique intake manifold features a 70mm throttle body opening. The camshaft is a hydraulic roller type with Cobra specific lift/duration. The engine breathes through a 70mm throttle body and factory H pipe dual exhaust. With all that power, the car needs its 13
