1962  Oldsmobile  Starfire Convertible

One of only 7,149 produced in 1962, at a base sticker price of $4744.00! This car was the top of the line model in 1962, and VERY expensive. These cars are becoming more and more difficult to find! Fully restored, these convertibles are bringing well over $32,000.00. This is your chance to buy, drive and restore a classic convertible.

This convertible has 79,380 ORIGINAL miles and is equipped with PS, PB, PW, Power Driver's Seat (2-way), Power Trunk Release, Ebony Black paint with black top and Garnet Mist interior. Original 394 high-compression Starfire 345HP 4-bbl V8 engine with original 4-Speed Hyrdamatic transmission. Runs great. Original, pit-free, near-mint wheel discs, with brand new set of retaining clips installed.

Car was built in Linden, New Jersey. The original color from the factory was Sheffield Mist (silver), which was then painted Ebony Black. I'm told that many dealers repainted silver Starfires because the silver did not contrast well with the aluminum side trim. Engine compartment is 99% original (it even has the original Opti-Kleen bottle!), with the exception of a newer Borg-Warner voltage regulator, and an electric hood lock operated by a circular key pad under the dash.

Interior is in very good overall condition. Front seats have been redone at one time in matching vinyl, but the rear seat is original factory-issued leather. Dash has two cracks, but is presentable. Carpets and mats are in good condition, with little wear. Original leather Garnet Mist convertible top boot and storage bag come with the car. Original, standard, and correct AM radio works, but factory power antenna was missing when I bought the car. I'll include a non-factory power antenna with purchase. Tachometer and gauges all work, however the turn signal stalk was neutered at some point and replaced with a manual switch installed to the left of the steering column under the dash. There are also working ammeter and oil pressure gauges installed above the center console tachometer that are not factory, but as installed look like a factory option.

The floors are very solid and original. The trunk floor (tub) is solid except for a few patches around the upper part surrounding the tub. Overall the paint is good, with only a few chips on the door edges. Convertible top is in excellent shape, however there is a silver dollar-sized piece missing in the top near the front lip of the header bar. This can be patched using a vinyl repair kit, however rain does not leak in through it. The rear window is faded and cloudly, but the rear window can be unzipped and removed for repair. Much of the exterior pot metal trim on the car has minor pitting, but not all. The wide aluminum side trim has some waves and pitting as well, but they are presentable. The stainless trim is presentable. One piece on the driver's side has a hole drilled through it (not sure why), and lower rocker trim is attached with screws. The bodywork done to the car included bondo, but looks presentable.

The front bumper is presentable, however the rear bumper has had its lower portion patched. The rear bumper design on these cars caused the lowers to rust prematurely. Included with the car is a rust-free core bumper. The frame has had some amateur rust repair on it. There is some rust through near the rear arches, however the car rides and drives fine. With the top up, the doors close like butter. With the top down, the driver's door doesn't close as smoothly, but still latches. The passenger door works fine always.

If I were keeping this car, I would find a 1962 Starfire hardtop or 88 hardtop and use its frame. This was my intent, however I am only selling it to make room and money for my 1969 Hurst/Olds restoration.

Not a show car (even though it has been to some shows), but would be a good, fun summer driver. This car gets lots of looks and thumbs up when cruising down the road. Please email me with any further questions you might have, although I've tried to list every aspect of the car.
