1956 Packard Caribbean Convertible
This car today is still in its original Dover White, Scottish Heather and Maltese Gray, this is not a restored car but an original.
This is #268 of 276 of 276 Packard Caribbean Convertibles produced by Packard in 1956. It has its original 374 cubic-inch V-8 engine with its original components, see photos of the bearings that are unscathed and in perfect condition after traveling only 50,000 miles since new. All components we plastigaged and in perfect tolerance. Please see photos of the bearing date stamps.
This car has all of the unique features:
- Fully reversible seat cushions, cloth on one side for winter and leather on the other side for summer, Please see photos of the date stamps on the inside of the cushions.
- Ultra-Matic push button automatic transmission.
- Unique torsion ride suspension which adjusts the cars ride height via an electric motor.
Caribbean has caused double takes when they first appeared in 1956, and they continue to amaze today. One of only 276 built, this car has never been shown as it has been in the position of the original owners since new and she had no interest in showing her car. This car has never been in the rain nor has it ever spent a night outside.
Today it still has it's original engine bearings as the photos show and has traveled on 50,000 miles since new. The original top and seat cover were in outstanding condition however the threads were beginning to brake as you sat on them, the originals are still with the car and will convey with the transfer. The top has been meticulously duplicated to the original specifications as well, due to the same circumstances. Please note the underside of the top matches the interior of the car and was only available on the Packard Caribbean.
And yes, I did disassembled the engine and many of the other components of this car to verify the originality, and yes again, everything on this outstanding example works just as it did the day it departed the factory including the clock, radio, self adjusting suspension and power antennas.
Background
The Caribbean was powered by by Packard's own massive 374-cubic-inch V8 with an impressive 310 horsepower rating thanks, in part, to twin four-barrel Rochester carburetors.
The 374 cubic-inch engine was the highest in the industry. The engine featured two - 4 barrel carburetors with 10:1 compression ratio and a push button automatic transmission.
Standard luxury equipment included Ultramatic automatic transmission with push-button controls on a column stalk , gold-tone 'Caribbean' scripts surrounding the car, power windows, power seat, a Wonder-bar radio and Power antennas. Impressive reversible seat cushions (boucle cloth on one side and leather on the other) were also featured.
New for 1956 was the twin traction differential with limited slip 'designed for the fellow who must drive in all kinds of weather.'
Packard also featured other safety items for 1956 such as:
- Side marker lights
- Wrap around parking and taillights
- Automatic torsion leveling system for optimum nighttime viability
