1972 Plymouth Scamp
FOR SALE: 1972 PLYMOUTH SCAMP TWO DOOR HARDTOP
This Plymouth Scamp is for those out there looking for a fun, reliable daily driver or a great foundation for something more exotic. It was originally a solid green V8 car, and is a very straight and clean example that is currently painted orange with a black bumble bee stripe and twin black hood scoops. It also now has a black interior with orange and gray accents. The Scamp has a modified 318 V8 with a 904 Torqueflite, air conditioning, power steering and front manual disc brakes, and a Sony AM/FM/Cassette deck. Everything works on the car, other than the a/c. It is all there but does not have a charge. The Scamp is a very reliable vehicle that starts every time on the first try and turns heads wherever it goes. It is one of the nicest driver quality A-Bodies I have seen in some time and is a hoot to drive and rumble around in.
The body is about as clean and rust free as one could ever hope for out of a daily driver A-Body. The floor pans and trunk pan are very solid and when you crawl under the car you can see the factory undercoating is all there and in nice shape. There are no indicators underneath of abuse or heavy impacts. The only rust I can find on the car is in the bottom of the driver’s door, it is starting to bubble there. In the trunk, there is a hole about an inch in diameter in the forward passenger side area. This hole is not in the spare tire well and would be easy to patch and repair. As far as body damage, there is a very slight crease in the right rear quarter, which removed some paint more than anything else. The chrome on the car needs refinishing as it is starting to age and lose its’ luster. All the windows are there, there are no cracks or milky areas and they all work properly. There are no signs of any major body damage anywhere on the car from a collision or an accident. The paint looks good at 50 feet but is strictly an amateur job. If I were keeping it, I would repaint it and do it right. The car deserves that sort of treatment.
The interior is very presentable for a driver. It has been dyed black and painted in orange accents to match the outside paint and again was an amateur effort. Everything works and it makes a very good overall impression. The front seats are manual buckets and came out of a late model Toyota. There are no tears in the upholstery (the rear seat has a cover to match the interior, it is green underneath and could be dyed black to match), no cracks in the dash pad, no faded or worn spots in the carpeting. It has an aftermarket tachometer and oil pressure gauge.
The power team is an excellent example of what can be done with a little time and effort. The engine is a 318 that sounds good and runs even better. It holds about 30 pounds of oil pressure at a hot idle and around 60 cruising down the road. I am not sure what internal modifications have been done inside, but it was done right. The engine does not smoke, leak, miss or act stupid. It can sit for months at a time and fire right off with nary a whiff of smoke or other unpleasantness. It has a camshaft of some sorts that I would guess to be around a 270 duration and about a 470 lift, if you were talking a Mopar Performance grind. It also has headers, a 2.5 inch aluminized exhaust system with Flowmaster mufflers, an Offenhauser 360 aluminum intake, and an Edelbrock 600 CFM four barrel carb with electric choke, and it sounds positively wicked. The engine does not heat up around town or on the interstate, even on the hottest day. The transmission is a 904 that shifts when and how it should with no leaks. It appears to have been replaced recently. The rear is a 7¼ inch unit that is a peg leg with a 2.76 gear ratio.
The brakes and suspension consist of a factory manual front disc system with rear drums. It has fifteen inch chrome wheels and a matching set of brand new 130 MPH speed rated tires. It also has an ADDCO aftermarket front sway bar and new shocks fore and aft. The car steers straight and feels solid going down the road. The brakes are in very good shape and the car stops without any pulling or other problems.
So if you are looking for an A-body that is a sweet ride with no real issues to just start up and start having fun in, look no further. And if you have been building a “dream” A-body in your mind and are now ready to make it a reality, this Scamp is an outstanding candidate. I would feel confident getting in this car and going any distance at any time. It is that good of a vehicle.
The price for the car is $5500 and I will listen to any partial trade offers on something that catches my eye or that I can turn around and sell. I am a car buff and I like all sorts of interesting American iron. You know the story, so many cars you want to fiddle with and so little time to do it in. If you want to find out more information and look at some digital photographs, or if you just want to talk old cars, please contact Ben in Ozona, Texas. May God bless America,
Ben
