1979 Pontiac Firebird Formula |
1979 Pontiac Firebird 400 automatic. Midnight blue with silver accents and tan interior. I bought this car several years ago as a hobby for me and my teenage sons. It has been garaged from October to May the last three years, and was stored winters before that. The boys each got to drive it to school for the spring of their Senior year in high school. I drove it occasionally to "cruise nights" and car shows. Now both of the boys are in college, and Dad has decided that he'd rather pay their tuition than hold onto his muscle car!
The body is solid, the paint is glossy, it has been lovingly waxed and maintained. There is a small break in the paint on the Enduro rubber nose, which is mostly covered by the LeBra front end cover. There is a small dent in the front drivers side, and another almost imperceptible dent in the drivers side door. Neither involves a break in the paint.
The headers and exhaust pipes are 1 season old. This Bird has the H-pipe headered exhaust, which produces the deep, resonant roar of a performance-tuned muscle car.
The interior is serviceable, but not restored. The dash is solid, as is the door trim. The T-Tops work perfectly, and I have the original Fisher T-top covers. There are two-year old sony 6x9 rear speakers, 5.5 inch front speakers, a 10 CD changer, all powered by a Sony 4x55 FM/Cassette with removable faceplate, with a powered radio antenna for excellent reception.
Important note - the heater box has been removed from the firewall. It was like that when I got it, but I never intended to run it in the winter anyway. It has no heat and no AC. But who needs AC when you've got T-tops?
The tires have less than 2000 miles on them. P275s in the rear, 235's in the front give it great handling and power off the line.
Recent work (this year or last) includes a major tuneup, a new HEI (high-energy ignition), new headers and pipes, new brake pads, new rear brake calipers, new emergency brake cable and ratchet, rebuilt wiper motor and pump ( these are hard to find new, so I sent the existing one out to be rebuilt), new front shocks, rebuilt rear air shocks.
The mileage reads 29365. It read 26310 when I bought it. I don't know if this number represents total mileage, but I know for sure that I have only put around 3000 miles on it in the past 3 years.
The VIN on this car says it should have the Olds 403 engine. The previous owner and my mechanic tell me that based on cylinder head and valve cover shape, water pump design, thermostat housing position, and lack of a forward mounted oil filler tube, which was common to the Oldsmobile family of V8's, that the engine is a Pontiac 400. The guy I bought it from told me that the guy HE bought it from told him that he had replaced the engine in 1998. My mechanic tells me that the sparkplug openings are tapered, which indicates that this is a 400, not a 403.
This Firebird starts easy, runs strong, and looks great! It is registered, insured, inspected and ready to drive away. It's fast, too. I'm a responsible citizen, and a careful driver, but I live in the middle of nowhere, and once or twice I did open it up on a stretch of straight, lonely road. Floor it from a dead start, the tires light up without power-braking, and you experience the sort of raw power that is the American muscle car experience. Not that I encourage that sort of thing - it's just as much fun to drive it slowly, and watch the admiring gaze of the people you pass by!
