For sale in our Chicago showroom is a 1957 Porsche 356 Speedster Replica unlike any other. The concept of the 356 was developed after wartime delays in 1948 and by the mid-50’s began to appear in the American market with much success. The little 2-seater cabriolets were instantly recognizable and the rounded design with large glass headlamps and horizontal tear drop taillights were part of the styling genius that made this car the icon it is today. The style of the 356 is so popular today that replicas have been manufactured to allow those with leaner pocketbooks to cruise in one of the most beautiful cars ever made. Most 356 Speedster replicas started life on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis and feature a 1600 cc air cooled engine. This car is titled as a ’73 Volkswagen but is far from a standard beetle powertrain. To start a VW/Porsche type 4, 4 cylinder air cooled, opposed cylinder, 2270 cc engine was built by Jake Raby of Raby Aircooled Technology. This engine has a 96mm bore, 78.4mm stroke and compression at 9.2:1. Dual Weber 44 carbs supply the fuel and fire is created by Mallory Unilite electronic distributor. Dual Derale external oil collers with thermostatic controlled fan and DTM engine cooler shroud with a balanced welded fan help this air cooled wonder stay cool. The custom side air ducts are functional and allow for fresh air to be taken in and the reverse engine cover louvers allow hot air to escape. Breathing is made easy thanks to the BAS custom German stainless steel exhaust header going into 2 Magnaflow polished stainless steel mufflers. Power is distributed to the 4-speed VW transaxle. The underside is just as impressive with a 2” x 0.125” carbon steel square tube perimeter chassis with .095” floor pan, reinforced center chassis tube, new front panhead, foot box crash bars, Knafer-traction system, KYB gas shocks and Urethane suspension bushings. Additional features are too numerous to list but rest assured close attention to all details were given to make this build truly a rolling masterpiece. The Sunburst Orange metallic paint stands out in contrast to the Corbeu bucket seats with lumbar. The polished stainless steel console, wood steering wheel and Porsche seat belts give the interior the final touches it deserves. One look at this little Speedster and you will fall in love.
